Brewing on Brew Day
It's brew day! In order to brew a beer we can follow the instructions below.
Getting started
- Navigate to your dashboard
- On the calendar near the top of the page, find the batch you scheduled to brew on the fermenter schedule
- If the batch color is green you are good to go and you can continue to the next step.
- If not then refer to the section below labelled "Fermenter Schedule Color Key"
- Click on the batch in the fermenter schedule and choose a brew date. It defaults to the day the batch is scheduled for, but you can change that.
- Then click "Brew it!"
- The batch is now brewing; you can make recipe adjustments and record brew day details as described below. The recipe is used as a template for the brew day, but we know that the exact details of the recipe may change on brew day. You can make adjustments to the brew day recipe without changing the original recipe.
Grain Bill
This is very similar in functionality to the recipe creation/edit process except for a couple of notable differences.
- You may add and delete grains just like recipe creation, except these grains are limited to what is in your inventory and in stock. You can't brew with grains you don't have in inventory.
- You also choose lot numbers on this screen for traceability purposes
Mash
On this screen you can start and stop timers that will record the times for various brew day activities and record pre-boil details. All of these steps are optional, but they help tremendously when trying to analyze what happened on brew day any time later.
Mash Rests
- You will click the "Start" button at the time that you start the rest, then click "Stop" the moment you stop the rest.
- You can adjust the temperatures of the mash rest here as well.
- Do this for each rest that you have on the batch
Vorlauf
- You will click the "Start" button at the time that you start the vorlauf, then click "Stop" the moment you stop the vorlauf.
Lauter
- You will click the "Start" button at the time that you start the lauter, then click "Stop" the moment you stop the lauter.
- You can adjust the temperatures of the lauter here as well.
Pre-boil
- Enter the pre-boil specifics in this area
Notes
- You can store any mash notes you need to in this field
Boil
As you might have guessed already this is the place where you record all the details of your boil time specifics
Stats
Here you will start and stop timers for your boil and record Final Volume and Original Gravity.
The final volume and original gravity are very important here to record. The final volume is what gets recorded as the volume in the fermenter. The original gravity allows the system to calculate ABV on the finished beer. The starting and stopping of the timers for your boil are optional, but it does help for future reference to record these data points.
Hop Schedule
This is very similar in functionality to the recipe creation/edit process except for a few notable differences.
- You may add and delete hops just like recipe creation, except these grains are limited to what is in your inventory and in stock. You can't brew with hops you don't have in inventory.
- You also choose lot numbers on this screen for traceability purposes
- You also record when you added the hops to the kettle while boiling. Click the "Add hop" button which will record the actual time you added the hop.
Notes
- You can store any boil notes you need to in this field
All times can be adjusted after if you make a mistake or need to adjust any of them for any reason
That's it, your brew day is complete!
