Enable Distilling on a Brand

There is no “Enable Distilling” toggle. Distilling turns on when any brand’s Industry Type is Spirits. Beer brands keep beer units and brew-day workflows. After the first Spirits brand, the account gains the Spirits settings tab, Spirit Types, DSPs, and the distilling left nav when Spirits is selected.

Before you start

  • You need permission to edit brands (row menu: Edit / Make Default / Delete).
  • Your account must be allowed to use Distilling. Next Glass turns on the release for the account before Spirits appears in Industry Type. If the account already has a Spirits brand, the option stays even if the release is later turned off.

How to enable Distilling

  1. Click the top-right avatar (not a gear).
  2. Click Producer settings. Page header: Producer Settings.
  3. Open the Brands tab.
  4. Click New, or on a row open ⋮ and click Edit.
  5. Set Name (required).
  6. Set Industry Type to Spirits. The field is not clearable. Options are Brewing and Spirits. Helper text: “Determines which production workflows, recipes, and compliance this brand uses.”
  7. If QuickBooks is connected, you may also see Finished Goods Asset Account and Cost of Goods Sold Account.
  8. Click Save Brand (or Cancel).

The Brands table columns are Name, Industry, Default. Industry shows Spirits, not “Distilling.”

After the first Spirits brand:

  • Producer Settings gains tabs Cookers & Stills and Spirits.
  • The avatar menu gains Spirit Types and DSPs.
  • If the producer also has Brewing brands, the Beer | Spirits switch appears under the header. A Spirits-only account never sees it.
  • The left nav switches to the Spirits set when Spirits is selected.

Units of measure

Beer units stay. They are not converted or removed.

  1. Still in Producer settings, open the Units tab (heading is Units until distilling is on; then it splits).
  2. Beer fields sit under Beer Units: IBU Formula, Volume, Gravity, Fermentables Default Unit, Hops Default Unit, Temperature, Color. Click Save on that block.
  3. A Spirits Units heading appears below. US defaults are pre-selected; dropdowns are not clearable:
  • Spirit Quantity — Proof Gallons or LAA (default Proof Gallons)
  • Spirit Strength — Proof or ABV (default Proof)
  • Volume — Gallons or Liters (default Gallons)
  • Water Volume — Gallons or Liters
  • Gauging Weight — Pounds or Kilos (default Pounds)
  • Fermentation Gravity — Specific Gravity, Plato, or Brix (default Specific Gravity)

Beer Gravity and spirits Fermentation Gravity are independent. Gravity is never converted into proof gallons.

What you cannot change

Industry Type is blocked when:

  • “cannot be changed because this brand already has production activity”
  • “cannot be changed — this is the only Brewing/Spirits brand and the account still has Brewing/Spirits activity” (for example in-bond lots still on the account)
  • “is not yet available” / “is not yet available for this account” (release is off)

Delete is on the row ⋮ menu, confirm Delete {name}?. It is disabled with “You cannot delete a default brand or a brand that has products.” Make Default is disabled with “This is already your default brand.”

There is no “turn off distilling” button. Removing the last Spirits brand (if allowed) is what drops the Spirits tabs.

Pro Tip: If you make beer and spirits, keep them on separate brands and use the Beer | Spirits switch. Mixed beer-and-spirits on the same vessel is not a Wave 1 workflow.
