A spirit type is the one building block your spirits resolve to. It carries two TTB classifications, declared by you at setup — the system never derives them. They lock permanently after the type's first transaction; the name stays editable.

Search: Search spirit types. Filter (default Active): All, Active, Disabled.
Columns: Name, Production and storage reporting column, Processing (Part IV) classification, Kind of spirits (mark), On purchase orders, Purchase options, Status, Locked.
If Kind of spirits (mark) is blank: red Not set, tooltip “Packages of this spirit print their required mark as incomplete until a Part 5 class and type is recorded (27 CFR 19.487).” Locked tooltip: “Classifications are immutable — this type has transactions” / “Classifications remain editable until the first transaction.” On purchase orders: Yes or —.

Empty state: “No spirit types found” plus a short explanation that a type carries a production and storage reporting column (tanks) and a Processing Part IV classification (bottled), and that marking it available on purchase orders lets you buy it in bulk and receive it in bond.
How to create a spirit type
- Click New. Drawer title: New Spirit Type (or Edit Spirit Type). Required field is marked.
- Name (required; unique per producer).
- Production and storage reporting column — not clearable. Options as shown: Whiskey 160 and under, Whiskey over 160, Brandy 170 and under, Brandy over 170, Rum, Gin, Vodka, Alcohol 190 and over, Alcohol under 190, Other.
- Processing classification (Part IV line) — not clearable. Includes Alcohol and neutral spirits (Line 49); Domestic whiskey 160 and under (Line 55); Brandy 170 and under (Line 57); Rum (Line 60); Gin (Line 61); Vodka (Line 62); Cordials, liqueurs and specialties (Line 63); Cocktails and mixed drinks (Line 64); Tequila (Line 65); Other (Line 66).
- A live teal hint while picking, for example: “In bulk, reports in the Vodka column of the Storage report; when bottled, reports on the Vodka line (Line 62) of the Processing report.” Under the two dropdowns: “You declare where this spirit reports — the system never derives it.”
- Whisky kind (5110.40 Part III) — placeholder “Only for a whisky column.” Options: Bourbon, Corn, Rye, Light, Other (write-in line).
- Brandy kind (5110.40 Part IV) — placeholder “Only for a brandy column.” Options: Grape brandy, All other brandy, Neutral grape brandy, All other neutral brandy, Other (write-in line).
- Helper: “Whisky and brandy owe their production a breakdown by kind — without it the report cannot show a total, because the breakdown beneath it would be missing this spirit. Every other kind of spirit leaves both blank. The cooperage a barrel counts as comes from the barrel type itself.”
- Kind of spirits (Part 5 class and type) — never locked. Placeholder e.g. “Whisky distilled from rye mash, Neutral spirits.” Helper: “What barrels and other packages of this spirit are marked as. Changing a designation already in use requires TTB approval (27 CFR 19.487(b)).”
- Check Available on purchase orders if you buy this type in bulk and receive it in bond. Helper: “Offer this type on the purchase order line picker — for spirit you buy in bulk and receive in bond. Spirit you distill or batch becomes a lot of this type without ever being purchased.”
- Click Save / Cancel. Toasts: Spirit type created / Spirit type updated.
If the type already has transactions, classifications render as read-only text plus: “This type has transactions: its TTB classifications are locked. The name can still be edited.” Production kind stays editable until it is set; once set and transacted it locks. Whisky kind on a non-whisky column: “only applies to a whisky reporting column” (same for brandy).
Quick-create from a PO line (Add New Spirit Type) defaults Available on purchase orders on and can pre-fill Name from the picker search.

Purchase options
Heading: Purchase options. Helper: “One per vendor quote — the option matching the purchase order's vendor pre-fills the line (amount, unit, price, and the default proof behind the implied $/PG).”
- Click + Add purchase option. Each fieldset is labeled Purchase option with a red remove.
- Preferred Vendor, Vendor Item Number.
- Arrives as — Tote, Bucket, Drum, Barrel (only if barrels is on), Bulk.
- Bulk only: Priced per (volume) — US: Wine Gallons (Volume WG), Proof Gallons (PG). Metric: Liters (Volume l), Litres of Absolute Alcohol (LAA).
- Counted modes: Volume per container (wine gallons) or liters — “What one arriving container holds — pre-fills the receive gauge and the implied $/PG.”
- Unit price — “Per container for Tote/Bucket/Drum/Barrel; per volume unit for Bulk.”
- Default proof — 1–200, step 0.1. “The proof this vendor quotes at — used for the implied cost per proof gallon. The receipt gauge is always hand-entered.”
Edit, disable, delete

- Disable (if Active) — no extra confirm. Disabled with “This type is held in active spirits inventory.” Status becomes Disabled (gray name). Enable if Disabled.
- Delete — confirm “Delete {name}?” Disabled with “A spirit type with transactions, purchase orders, or recipes cannot be deleted — disable it instead.” Toast: Spirit type deleted. If forced: “This spirit type has transactions, purchase orders, or recipes and cannot be deleted — disable it instead.”
Pro Tip: Do not multiply spirit types for age or proof. Age lives on the lot. Proof lives on the lot. One type named “GNS” can bottle as several products.
